CivicsSchool FAQs

You asked and we answered! Have more questions? Write to us at [email protected]

  • What is CivicsSchool?

CivicsSchool is an online civics education platform developed by the National Center for Grow Your Own (NCGYO). It offers engaging, self-paced learning to strengthen students' civic knowledge, understanding of the Constitution and U.S. government, and their ability to participate thoughtfully in civic life. Lessons include videos, primary-source analysis, interactive activities, simulations, quizzes, and reflection questions.

  • Who created CivicsSchool, and why?

CivicsSchool was developed by NCGYO to expand access to high-quality civics education and help students understand the principles, institutions, rights, and responsibilities that support American constitutional democracy. The project is funded through the U.S. Department of Education National Activities Grant and written by experienced educators and civics experts.

  • What is the purpose of CivicsSchool?

CivicsSchool helps students build the knowledge and skills to understand government and participate in civic life, exploring questions like how government works, why the Constitution matters, how individual rights are protected, and how people can participate in schools, communities, and government. The focus is on analysis, evidence, and application, not just memorizing facts.

  • Do the courses have to be completed in order?

No. While the content builds on itself, each course can also be used as standalone instructional material to support your social studies curriculum.

  • Who is CivicsSchool designed for?

CivicsSchool is designed for students and teachers in grades 3–12. The curriculum is organized into five learning tracks: Civics Teachers, All Teachers (General Ed), and grade band series for 3–5, 6–8, and 9–12. The 6–8 series is currently being piloted, with the remaining four series coming soon — see the "Coming Soon" section below for details.

  • Does it replace my current curriculum?

No. CivicsSchool is designed to complement and strengthen existing civics or social studies instruction. Teachers may use an entire course, specific chapters or lessons, or targeted activities that match classroom needs and pacing.

  • How is CivicsSchool organized? Is student progress saved?

The Grades 6–8 series includes 8 modules, 16 chapters, and 100+ lessons, using a consistent lesson sequence that helps students prepare, learn, apply, and demonstrate understanding. Because it's self-paced, students can pause a lesson and return to it later.

  • How does CivicsSchool align with standards?

CivicsSchool is designed around core civics and social studies concepts common across all state standards, including founding principles, the Constitution, government branches, rights, responsibilities, American history, and civic participation.

  • Is there a cost, and where can I get help?

Participating pilot schools, districts, and students receive CivicsSchool access at no cost. 🆘 For questions, start with the CivicsSchool teacher resources on this page or email [email protected] — We look forward to working with participating schools and districts to provide implementation and technical support.
